Why are Sony fanboys so defensive about PSN problems?

godfree | 25 April 2011 | Editorials |

The buzz going around since last week was about Playstation Network being down for millions of online gamers around the world. I posted my opinion on Twitter about it and for some reason a bunch of Sony fanboys went into attack mode for just saying the truth about PSN. Personally, I think Playstation 3 is a great system with so many “must have” games coming out later this year. But let’s be real, just because their online service is free that doesn’t mean it is better than Xbox Live.

Honestly, I would rather see Sony charge for their online service and with the support of the fans this online service could be better than what they have right now for free. Just by saying: “I don’t like PSN,” be prepare to get bashed by Sony fanboys.

Look guys, make me change my mind! I’ll post the following questions and I want YOU, the Sony fans, to change my mind about their online service.

1) What makes PSN better than Xbox Live?

2) What are your favorite features?

3) When you download a demo/beta, do you wait for a long time to download it?

4) Since the launch of PSN, how many times this service went down? And why?

5) Are you happy with PSN? If so, why?

6) Do you even use PS Home? Yay or Nay?

I’m planning on buying a PS3 sometime this year but this won’t change my opinion about their online service. One of the best things I like about Microsoft is they that are always making changes; adding new features, download speed is getting better and my favorite party chat. Is it perfect? Nope. But since the launch of their online service until now in 2011, I had only 1 major issue. Holiday 2007 when the XBL went down for some people (not all gamers).  But Microsoft kept in touch with their customers since it went down non-stop. Communication is the KEY!

Sony’s PSN has been down for days now. Why is it they are so quiet? That bothers me. A situation like this makes me change my mind on buying their console. They have fans that paid a lot of money just to buy a PS3 and Sony won’t give them an update on why their online service is down. Come on now, that’s just wrong!

Can you imagine the amount of people that purchased Portal 2, Socom 4 and Mortal Kombat and can’t even go online to play during a holiday weekend? That’s a major fail on Sony’s part. Bad timing too! What about those that don’t even go online to read Sony’s blog? They must be freaking out right now.

Microsoft had a vision with Xbox Live since before the launch of the original Xbox. Years later, look at the major changes they have been doing. If it wasn’t for them (and Dreamcast), there would be no PSN, no Wii online, no friend codes, etc. There’s nothing wrong with that. The more companies learn from their competition, the better it is for us gamers. But when something is wrong YOU need to say it. There’s too many fanboys and not enough people keeping it real. That’s what our community needs right now.

Call us and leave a message: 786-273-7GTR and let us know your opinion about this whole thing.

    1) What makes PSN better than Xbox Live? – It isn’t

    2) What are your favorite features? – The browser?

    3) When you download a demo/beta, do you wait for a long time to download it? – AGES

    4) Since the launch of PSN, how many times this service went down? And why? – Can’t remember, but definitely been down a few times.

    5) Are you happy with PSN? If so, why? – Not really, the updates take hours and seriously effect the casual gamer who doesn’t play much.

    6) Do you even use PS Home? Yay or Nay? – What’s PS Home? LOL

    • Jones Yusuf

       Just a dumbass.. point BLANK

  • NW

I do agree with you that it is bad timing, especially since many were on spring break. We aren’t quite on this subject at all, in fact many are angry and complaining. I think the main reason why so many people are somewhat angry with articls like these is because it’s being hacked to death and compared to live by other saying live is more stable, when in fact this is the first time PSN has been done for such a long duration, but still not as long as Live 2 weeks. Live has gone down multiple times. Same with PSN. Only times i can really think of when PSN went down unexpectibly was either when hackers started messing with it (before this one) other then that they are usually announced ahead of time.

Do i use home? Yeah sometimes but not much. Its still a great service and has a lot more work to do and promises to make.

Favorite feature is just overall it’s free and for most it’s stable, so yeah i am happy with it. Of course it i was paying for the online proportion i wouldn’t be.

downloads for beta that average between 1-2gb take me about 1 hour to download. It all about internet connections and your NAT type. I use to have NAT3 slow as F, then i did a direct login into my Provider account through PSN and now my NAT 1 and downloads are very fast.

LIVE went down for two weeks, but if you actually read the article you’d understand that it didn’t affect everyone. Since then, I believe LIVE has only been down for SCHEDULED maintenance.

      • http://twitter.com/godfree Danny Pena (Godfree)

Yea. But they do let you know in advance. LIke I said: Communication is the KEY!

        • Anonymous

plus when XBL goes down they give Gold Memebers a month of free membership to make up for it.what will you get from PSN when they go back not a thing, just a sorry.

      • http://www.gamertagradio.com peterocc

Live did not go down. It was oversaturated due to the holiday season. Those that could connect were able to play. 2 different things.

    1) What makes PSN better than Xbox Live? – It’s not. It’s got some catching up to do.

    2) What are your favorite features? – Hulu+

    3) When you download a demo/beta, do you wait for a long time to download it? – Longer than it should.

    4) Since the launch of PSN, how many times this service went down? And why? – This is the second really big outage. First was 2010 bug.

    5) Are you happy with PSN? If so, why? – Yes. It does the job, just needs more bandwidth.

    6) Do you even use PS Home? Yay or Nay? – No but I will be soon.

PSN is not free, it is provided with the purchase of the Playstation 3 package. Xbox with holds features until you pay them. Microsoft holds the system hostage from developers and gamers. Not allowing private or 3rd party servers. Sony blocks other servers as well but provides services for online play. I will happily wait for PSN to return and save my money to buy more games. I’m sure the Developers prefer that too.

If you prefer Xbox live that is your choice. Your feeling toward Playstation Network is normal. What you are feeling is called buyers remorse. It is the realization that you could of bought something better, the Playstation 3.

    • John

hahaha, this is what the article you’re reading is about. Dummy.

      • SamLit

Dummy? What are you 12? Thanks Nelson Muntz

    • http://www.gamertagradio.com peterocc

Do you understand that there are agreements between developers and Xbox Live wherein they receive a percentage in return as well. Regardless the developers still get a cut.

Its not buyers remorse unless he states he is displeased with the service he receives from XBL as opposed to PSN. He has not stated such so therefore you’re comment is useless.

While MS does have controls in place it is to protect the system as a whole to prevent exactly what is occurring with PSN. Also remember that MS is and always has been a server/client software developer. This is their forte.

    1) What makes PSN better than Xbox Live?

*It’s free and it does the same thing except party-chat. But in exchange it lets devs offer stuff for free [they can't on XBL and you can ask Valve about this], features like Steam and MMO games are possible on the system cus of the less tougher policies. Games like LBP, ModNation Racer, MAG, etc. are possible on the system just because the PSN membership is free.

    2) What are your favorite features?

    * Netflix, PSN movie store, Qriocity, the browser, the ability to share up to 5 times downloadable games with your friends, and that I can easily create accounts for other regions. Like for example, u can create a japanese account and download demos of games that probably will never make it into the west.

    3) When you download a demo/beta, do you wait for a long time to download it?

    * I have a slow connection (3mb) and to download a 1GB file it takes like 1h:30m.

    4) Since the launch of PSN, how many times this service went down? And why?

    * Like once every 4 months for like 3 hours for maintenance.

    5) Are you happy with PSN? If so, why?

*Just read the prior responses and I think you’ll understand why. Free baybee!

    6) Do you even use PS Home? Yay or Nay?

*The last time I used this garbage was 2 years ago so, I don’t know how good it is in its current state.

  • Clbobe

I would gladly pay for PSN if they would simply give me party chat. The fact that I can’t communicate vocally with my friends unless we are playing the same game is unacceptable. I play on PSN all the time and have a shitload of friends. We communicate through txt as do most people on PSN. As you can imagine, that sucks. And PS+? Really? So now Sony is asking us to pay for demos? Really? Home is garbage and a waste of effort and time. Updates take forever and happen to often though it has gotten better. There was a time I dreaded powering on my PS3 for fear I would have to wait an hour to play my new game. You can’t really compare XBL to PSN. There is no comparison. People who bring up the price of XBL are a joke. Its what $60 a year? Less than my monthly phone bill. Way less than my cable bill. Our hobby is video games. There $60 a pop. $60 a year is cheap quite frankly. I own both systems. PS3 is an amazing machine and IMO they have the best exclusives. That being said XBL>>>PSN

    • John

Exactly, when you break it down the cost for XBL is cheap. Like the article says, just because something is free doesn’t make it better.

  • http://twitter.com/BlackAdam52 BlackAdam52

Say what you will about it being a free online service. I think Sony owes us an explanation on what’s happening with the PSN. Sure PSN is free of charge, but there are PSN Plus and DC Universe Online subscribers who’ve had useless accounts for almost a week.

I want to know if any of my personal information has been comprised. This may sound extreme, but if my personal info has been compromised, Sony needs to provide free identity theft protection. If my insurance company can do it, Sony can do it.

When MS screwed up, they made it right by extending console warranties to cover the RRoD. The 360 I had before my slim had a failed DVD drive. The warranty expired and MS still waived the repair fee for me. I’m far from a console loyalist, but MS earned some brownie points with me when they did that.

    • _Andy_W

I agree, they need to communicate with users more. They have’t really said anything apart from “we’re working on it” which isn’t good enough.

  • Most-ghost

Just cuz u pay for something means it’s gonna rock!! MS came out with the paid service 1st, saw it as means of making money from fools. Y do u need to pay for a demo a game company is trying to promote?? Xbl does!! psn doesn’t. Psn and xbl are different companies, so features are gonna be different.. Should xbl be free? Sure it should. Sony can add need features and still keep it free.

Fav features?? = psn is a network.. Nun to really like or dislike.

Downloading on my ps3 is ez ad abc. I’ve heard you guys complain bout how slow it is. When really it’s not. It depends on ur download speed .. Updating the system is really fast cuz the files r small. Ps3 functions in it’s own way of downloading and installing. Don’t expect the same with other systems. I even sometimes use my phone 3G network on my ps3. Play online with little lagg.

This is my first time witnessing serious or prolong inconvenience with the psn since 2007.. It really Sux.
I’m really happy with the psn. All my frenz r on there.. Love how u can download dynamic themes. There’s pulse with this sexy Asian lady. Qore keeps me up to date with games. Movies and everything playstation.

Ps home? Very interesting virtual space. Sure it’s not high in graphics or looks stunning but it’s a nice place to interact, socialize, make frenzy, watch movies, play mini games and lots more. I use home when I’m bored of playing other AAA games.

Overall PSN and XBL are different but they do pretty much the same thing.

    Didn’t edit. iPhone used!!

  • http://twitter.com/BlackAdam52 BlackAdam52

oops. In my previous rant, I forgot to answer Godfree’s questions. LOL

    1) What makes PSN better than Xbox Live? IMO, it’s not better than XBL.

    2) What are your favorite features? Netflix is good on both my 360 and PS3, but for some reason the picture quality is better on my PS3. I also like remote access to my PS3 when using my PSP.

    3) When you download a demo/beta, do you wait for a long time to download it? Yes. Don’t even get me started on the MAG beta.

    4) Since the launch of PSN, how many times this service went down? And why? I can only think of 2 times when there was unscheduled downtime.

    5) Are you happy with PSN? If so, why? For the most part, yes. I’m happy with most of the features. Just wish we could get cross game chat.

    6) Do you even use PS Home? Yay or Nay? I last used PS Home in 2009 to download the Batcave home that came with Arkham Asylum.

  • Clbobe

I wanted to add a comment about downloads also. PSN is just slow period. I have a great connection and XBL downloads superfast. PSN use to be horrendously slow but has gotten better. Still miles behind XBL though.

  • http://twitter.com/michaeltorr Michael Torres

I think it’s heartbreaking that Sony customers and I say Sony customers because people seem to forget that this affects not just PS3 owners, but also PSP Slim and Go owners.

Things break; that’s a fact of life and which is why I can understand how a of PSP/PS3 owners are being understanding about this whole situation — for the most part. But this isn’t just something that broke, it’s as security issue that Sony should have prepared for. Boy Scouts rule and all, it’s something that Sony should have been doing for years to PSN. Refining the experience and adding better security to the backend. Just because for years there wasn’t a legitimate threat to the service, didn’t mean that they had to just rest on their laurels.

All that can be done is make the best of a bad situation. Sony is doing the best it can to fix the problem and bring back PSN stronger than before. The saying goes: “Shit happens”.

I’ve only used PSN on certain occasions and was fine with the experience. Is it as robust as Live? No, but than again, customers aren’t paying into it forcing Sony to invest that money into the service. What’s added is on Sony’s dime and what they deem to be a benefit to the service. As it stands, I think PSN is a great service that allows PS3 owners and PSP owners to play online and download great content.

I think the biggest screw up from this entire situation has been Sony’s incredibly vague communication to the community and lack of openess. I haven’t read of any time frame of when the service would be back up or even a hint of what the real problem is. I think their loyal fanbase and consumers as a whole deserve more. It’s a horrible situation that Sony is in, but its making it harder for fans with their lack of information. In times like these, companies need to comfort and assure their fans that things are going to be OK, and explain where they are every step of the way.

I have owned a PS3 for 2 years now and the only features I use it for are the Hulu+ which I will stop once XBL has it. And the blu ray player.

PSN might be free but yes friend adding is as easy as XBL, chatting is LAME!!! can only chat on the dash and in Home, REALLY PSN, REALLY!!!

It’s free I know but the dash board? talk about screen burning. Home is cool but isn’t it still in the beta? and always changing? just launch it already, honestly.

Like the article said, sure XBL had its draw backs but that was way back in 2005 before 360 even 6 years later we got party chat can chat across all games and party up in Zune and Netflix and I’m sure in Hulu as well. PS3 nothing now I understand that you want to keep the games the way they are meant to played, with no chat or custom soundtracks, I GET IT REALLY!! but if Xbox give me that option I’ll use it sometimes, but at least give me the option.

Sure games made just for PS3 look amazing but your using PS2 controls left and right bummer to shoot and focus, GIVE ME A BREAK!! We have consoles that use triggers now to control that, Wii and Xbox 360 why can’t you do it as well, honestly.

Would I pay 50-60 bucks for PSN? NO, even if they did everything XBL did I wouldn’t why do I need to pay for two memberships when 90 percent of my friends are now on XBL will they go to PSN maybe but I can’t afford both and really I think if PSN did it now more ppl will complain rather than join it’s just to late. Who has PSN PLUS?? I got it for Hulu Plus but once its free forget I cancelled out.

Am I a Xbox Fanboy, maybe I been called it all the time, but I own all three systems, I played Heavy rain and Uncharted 2. Little Big Planet, I missed, Killzone, is no Halo, Resistance is no Gears of war, and Mass Effect 2 on PS3 didn’t seem much of an improvement that I need to own it for both systems.

PS# and PSN seem to be stuck in 2008 and it’s 2011. XBL right now 60 bucks, gets me social networking, a rich community, netflix, and hulu, and Zune. PSN for free, I get Home, one person chats, hulu plus, netflix, and that’s it. PSN acts like it has one person manning the helm while XBL has fleets of staff manning it. XBL we are 99 percent warned of the shutdown or maintenance it goes through, sure some games might not have servers and lags or can’t do multi player but thats not XBL but more the developer or publishers fault.

What I don’t understand is why do I need to sign into PSN to use Netflix or Hulu Plus if the PSN service is free? why even link it? my PS3 can still connect to the net so let me just login like a web page or app with out the PSN extension. I know and understand why XBL makes you since you have to pay for ht service in order to use the app. I get it but PSN is free!!!

If a friend were to be getting a PS3 right now, I would really tell him to wait. You waited 5 years to get one now? wait for PS4 honestly, go get a Blu ray player it does the same thing, call your friends and do a conference call, gee I can have 4 on a call on my cell vs one on my PSN chat and I can watch movies at the same time. Sure your missing like God of War 3, Restisance, maybe Killzone, Maybe Little Big Planet, Maybe Heavy rain, but if you don’t own a system now you missed it all already. A blu ray player, it only does everything minus games you can play on XBL and it’s way cheaper.

Lastly the worst thing I think Sony and PS3 has done it’s not this shut down, but taking a guy to court to sue him. really Sony?!? REALLY!?! you need to set an example to the community? why not just do what Microsoft did ban the consoles kill their gamertag and call it a win. But a Lawsuit over it that’s just in poor taste I feel. If I didn’t buy like 100 dollars worth of DLC content and hulu plus my console would be traded or sold, but i feel the same way about my Wii.

  • http://twitter.com/ladyluck34 ladyluck34

While I think XBL is in general the better service, the fact is that Microsoft has had 10 years of improving a reliable (and not free) online experience. It’s only within the last year that Sony has offered gamers the chance for more at a cost when it comes to online service (read: not consistent money source for Sony because they don’t require gamers to pay for the service).

As such, it’s going to take a while to build revenue towards improving the system. Hate to say it, but they’re better off holding that money and putting it towards fixing up their online system for the next generation instead of trying to rush it out and probably do it only half-way now on the PS3.

I think the only real mistake here is the lack of straightforward and informative communication from Sony to their system owners. Should the fanboys be freaking out? No. But on the same note, too many people are blaming Sony for the actions of hackers. No matter how much you may worship XBL, if hackers wanted to do the same there they could with little difficulty. It’s very little to do with PSN actually being down and a whole lot to do with how Sony has responded.

Is being Truthful gonna get our Live (psn) back ??????

If it is then ill be truthful wats wrong with that ????

Here is the difference between xbox and playstation users if live players friends move to playstation they would make the change as well but as for me I have playstation and if all of my friends for some retarded reason switched to live I wouldn’t because playstation is more convenient for me and I have had mine for about 6 years no problem and with 60 dollars a year for live I have saved 60*6=$360 so if my playstion does go to shit soon I’ll just buy a new one. P.S. 360 dollars will get me a slim playstation and uncharted 3.

    1) What makes PSN better than Xbox Live? What makes psn better than xbox live is simple really…the exculsive content and ps1 games. the freeness and no *points* money and the XMB

    2) What are your favorite features? Netflix Hulu+ Quriosity Video store demo store text/video messaging XMB

    3) When you download a demo/beta, do you wait for a long time to download it? I dont really see a bit of difference at all…like 1500 mb 20 minutes.

    4) Since the launch of PSN, how many times this service went down? And why? the y2k bug and this new one…netflix still works…so big whoop

    5) Are you happy with PSN? If so, why? oh yeah features features features…but im not a online gamer at heart…love single player and sequels.

    6) Do you even use PS Home? Yay or Nay? lol yes from time to time..mainly for chess and the threather…and if they throw a new game on there or some sorta game content for disc based games.

  • Jamake1005

    1) What makes PSN better than Xbox Live? Its not better but its good!

    2) What are your favorite features? Free online/Netflix/Home

    3) When you download a demo/beta, do you wait for a long time to download it? Honestly not too long!

    4) Since the launch of PSN, how many times this service went down? And why? Only 2 I remember.

    5) Are you happy with PSN? If so, why? Yes it does what its suppose to do me personally I havent had any probs with PSN. Would i like more features sure but it does what i need it to do and its free!

    6) Do you even use PS Home? Yay or Nay? Yes Home has gotten a lil better since it first started.

Im not a fanboy i think console wars and fanboys are dumb. I prefer ps3 to me it has better games and is a better system. I do believe XBL is better than PSN but i also believe it should be you guys pay for it and its microsoft so yes XBL better be better if u ask me lol. PSN isnt as bad also as some ppl make it out to be. PS3 fans should admit XBL is better bc it its. But PSN is free and for a free service im sorry its damn great! Most probs ppl have with PSN is their internet connection speeds bc me and my friends hardly have any lag or problems.
