So here’s a question. A lot of people I talk to about new games (when they come out) tend to gravitate towards a variety of big name companies/sites (like Kotaku and IGN) to read the review and score.

Example: I got Dragon Age and was playing it. I brought the game up in a clan practice and had someone tell me that it was nothing like they thought because one large site review made it out to be similar to Oblivion. Now what?!?!? They’re not that alike except maybe some minor elements of game play. Blah, horrible review if they said that (in my opinion of course).

As we all know, anything is subject to opinion and interpretation. We’ll all have completely different views on what makes a good game and what we enjoy. I personally don’t seek out large or small site reviews, though I have no problem reading them. I tend to say ‘eh, OK.’

I prefer to ask people who have the game about it. What do you like? What don’t you like? Why? What do you look for in a game? Do you recommend it and why? Even then, some games just have no interest to me so good ‘reviews’ from friends might not sell it to me.

So do you read reviews? Larger or smaller sites? How much weight do you put on them and the score they’re given? Do you do your own research on a game such as trailers and game play videos? Developer documentaries? Besides big names (sequels or companies), what really sells you on a game?

What sells me? A good story and maybe some good gaming too ;-] with cookies of course.

Ultimately it comes down to what I hear. I listen to a number of podcasts(GTR, 4guys1up, Rebel FM, Uncle Gamer, Major Nelson, Bombcast, Podtoid), if what they are talking spurs some interest, I will check it out. If I see a review I read the concluding paragraph to give me a general idea of what the reviewer thinks. Then if I'm still not sold, if someone on my friends list is playing the game, I will ask what they think. I like to do my own homework, but I'm very good at suggesting games to people that I know.

Also of note, I haven't played Dragon Age yet. From what I have seen and heard of it, I would never even consider putting it in the same sentence as Oblivion. Two totally different experiences.

I will also depend my decision on what I hear on the podcats I hear and my love for the game itself (yeah I'm still waiting for Sonic Adventures 3). I consider most of the earlier reviews as "hype reviews", and having already experienced what it hapenned with GTA4, I prefer to wait for everyone's opinion.
