SteelSeries Sensei Wireless Mouse & CloudSync Compatibility – A Great Idea with the Potential to be Greater
So this is going to be a bit of a combination post. I know many of you probably looked at the title and said “oh, it’s about a mouse so that’s just PC.” And you’re kind of right. But it’s not all PC related because there’s an interesting idea in here that SteelSeries is running with (in relation to PC for now). That said, this one will have some information in regards to the press release SteelSeries sent out recently and where exactly I’m going with this (I promise it’s going somewhere).
I’m going to break this down a little bit between the info from this press release and what I’m thinking from it.
First off, they’re announcing the pre-order opportunity for SteelSeries’ new Sensei wireless mouse. Cool, as a sometimes PC gamer I love the idea of a wireless mouse because the wires are just annoying. However, usually the response time on a wireless isn’t ideal for any fast paced gaming. We don’t really see this on consoles since the preference is wireless controllers and they’re usually optimized (or rather, we just don’t know any better anymore) for that delay.
Now on to the parts I found interesting in a general gaming sense (because of course I love seeing any new gear regardless of platform). SteelSeries Engine is a program that’s used to maximize performance and allow you to manage and edit all your SteelSeries gear in one place (I love that). So they’ve recently launched the SteelSeries Engine 3, with all the shiny updates and improvements. There is now a new feature called CloudSync.
To use their words, the CloudSync “provides gamers with the ability to save and access all of their peripheral settings wherever they are.”
Now for all the non-PC gamers. You probably don’t care. And even some of the PC gamers, if you don’t travel with your tower very often (I so want to get another gaming laptop so I can travel with my games) then it’s kind of ‘eh’ anyways. But I’m looking more at the brilliance of the idea.
Now those of you that have gamed with me know that I normally play on odd settings (on console). I’m right handed, but prefer lefty settings for the triggers when available. My Y-axis must always be inverted or I might as well be a sloth trying to use a controller. Very slow moving.
Maybe you see where I’m going with this? Having attended tournaments, trade shows, expos, and just played at home with a ton of friends, the need to change the controller settings every time I play is annoying (yeahhh, first world problems). I would love if the console companies, publishers, developers, and all others could somehow take SteelSeries’ example and implement something similar for the consoles.
What if you could set on your account/profile what settings you prefer generally and genre specific? Then it’s tied to the account and any time you start a new game, it just fills that in and there’s no constant visits to the start menu and controller options. For every shooter, it’d default to inverted Y-axis and lefty (when available) for me. Well, actually, invert Y-axis on all games. But you get the point!
So SteelSeries, well done to you! Maybe this kind of functionality will start becoming more standard on consoles as the companies move towards the digital and cloud space like PC has been. Until then, I’ll just be happy with all these PC options and woe every time I have to adjust settings on console.
