Serious Sam 3: BFE Interview with Roman Ribaric, CEO of Croteam

By on April 7, 2011

Mad props and huge thanks to Roman Ribaric, CEO of Croteam, for being awesome enough to take time and answer some of the questions we had about Serious Sam 3: BFE. And sending us these spiffy images as well.

Don’t give us details (we want to be surprised), but how connected to First Encounter will this game be?

Serious Sam 3: BFE serves as a prequel to Serious Sam: The First Encounter and tells the story leading up to the events of the original game. You’ll definitely see some familiar areas in addition to some completely new locales. It was important to us that we build upon the existing Serious Sam legend and expand on some of Sam’s earlier adventures to explain how in the hell he got into the situations you’ve already played through.

Adding to that, as a prequel will SS3: BFE make references to the “later” happenings of  First Encounter?

The game has a ton of completely new scenarios and unique enemies for Sam to face but there are definitely some classic Serious Sam references in Serious Sam 3: BFE. I think fans of the series will be very happy with what we’re doing with Serious Sam 3: BFE and those fans that just picked it up with Serious Sam HD will appreciate the throwback action and fun.

What kind of changes might we see that diverge from the traditional Serious Sam standards?

While we didn’t want to diverge too much from what makes Serious Sam games fun, our team has come up with some really fantastic new twists on the trademark features of the series. The over-the-top action and humor really shine through and we’ve got some new gameplay tricks like the melee attacks and destructible environments. Of course, there are some secrets still to be revealed but I can assure you they will be very entertaining when you get your hands on them.

New enemies like the Scrapjack and Khnum will be making appearances.  When developing them, was the team going for a particular result or just adding to the Serious Sam awesomeness?

We wanted to pile on the awesome and introduce some new enemies that fans would find a little intimidating. Serious Sam is known for enemies like the Headless Kamikaze and Kleer that attack in big groups and make your palms sweat a little bit. These new guys are going to be the bad boys in the back waiting to absolutely wreck your world.

Tell us about this 16 player co-op (it seems just a little daunting).  Will the difficulty increase to reflect the number of players?  Will there be any changes to the campaign mode based on the number of players? (It sounds super fun, but how easily can I betray and kill that one friend that gets annoying?)

You’ve played Serious Sam games before right? The 16-player co-op is total mayhem! We’ve traditionally scaled up the enemies and the difficulty as more players join forces in co-op. When you get to 16-players tearing it up our developers throw everything they’ve got at you and it really becomes overwhelming. To that point, if you want to take out someone on your team you might want to think twice since having that extra gun blazing might be the only thing keeping your group alive! :)

About online versus, are there any changes from what Deathmatch has been in the past?  What about Beast Hunt?

We’ll have more to announce on multiplayer soon but I can tell you that all the classic modes will be there in addition to the new ones like Beast Hunt and Survival that were introduced in Serious Sam HD. The 16-player deathmatch will pretty much melt your face.

What is the team most excited about with this game? Anything crazy or odd you want to put on the table?

One of the things we are excited about is how true the game is to its roots and it really is a throwback to the “golden age” of first-person shooters. I think a lot of recent shooters have players ducking behind cover for half the game and asking them to be overly tactical with each battle. No escort missions or stealth sections forced in for no reason. Serious Sam 3: BFE is about pulling the trigger and letting the bodies fall where they may. We really think that is something missing from today’s shooters and we want to bring back that pure, unfiltered fun people love about Serious Sam games.

So, can we know what the BFE stands for? You know, just because?

Of course not, don’t be ridiculous.
